About the Item

Suffused with brilliant tangerine and jade tones and featuring an exuberant, Art Deco zebra cavorting amidst a group of coconut palms, this brilliant example of American enamel artistry was created by Edward Winter, one of the nation's pioneering artists in the medium. Winter studied with Joseph Hoffmann in Vienna before experimenting with enamels in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, creating some of the finest panels, bowls, vases and dishes of the era. The rim of this plate is a deep brown, which fades subtly into the tangerine ground of the scene. The piece is signed by Winter on the reverse.
