Large dish enamelled in white, green and brown tones. This is a beautiful and very large ceramic centerpiece.
Geometric decorations.
In very good condition.

Robert Picault (1919-2000), studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and joined Vallauris in 1946 in a post-war period of reconstruction and ideological and spiritual renewal. The village becomes a ceramics capital after Pablo Piccaso's arrival.
There, with Jean Derval and Roger Capron, his schoolmates, he founded the Callis workshop. Picault, a potter, creates the pieces that his friends Derval and Capron decorate.
Then he creates his own workshop next to Picasso's studio. He produced more personal pieces based on black enamel and alquifoux, drawings of animals and women. Then Robert Picault became particularly interested in culinary ceramics, which he helped to renew. He uses a typical set of colours, based on green and brown, copper oxide and iron oxide, applied with a brush on the white enamel. He decorates his pieces with motifs of fauna and flora, but also with lines and geometric shapes.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.

His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors.
A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop.
