William Hutton & Sons English Sterling Silver 1897 Victorian Two-Handled Tray
About the Item
William Hutton & Sons monumental English sterling silver two-handled tray from 1897 (Victorian era). beautifully engraved with stylized natural and geometric motifs, with a gadrooned rim, and handles adorned with shell and leaf motifs. It measures 28 1/2'' from handle to handle (24'' excluding the handles) by 18'' in width by 1 1/3'' in height, weighs an impressive 123.3 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
William Hutton & Sons was established in 1800 when William Hutton established his silverware firm in Birmingham, which later moved to Sheffield in 1832. In 1863, two years before William Carr Hutton. William Hutton's son died, a showroom in London was opened. It was in 1893 that the business acquired Rupert Favell & Co, a manufacturer silversmith based in London. In 1902 William Hutton & Sons Ltd acquired Creswick & Co, a silverware manufacturer based in Sheffield. In 1930, William Hutton & Sons Ltd was then absorbed by James Dixons & Sons. James Dixon had been founded in 1806. The firm exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851, being awarded several prizes in different classes for silver and Britannia metal. Pieces by William Hutton & Sons are in the permanent collections of prestigious museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This exceptional pair of antique Victorian boxed silver fish servers, in sterling standard, consists of a serving knife and fork.
The blade of the knife and the drop of the fork have an incurved shaped form.
The anterior of the knife is embellished with a bright cut engraved band of leaf ornamentation paralleling the shaped side of the blade, accented with a suspended floral festoon and fabric swag designs.
The drop of the fork is ornamented with further bright cut engraved floral festoon designs extending from a wrigglework decorated border to the lower portion of the four tines.
The posterior surface of each shaped blade is plain and embellished with a paralleling scalloped border to the incurved edge.
