About the Item

Bow Porcelain Polychrome Chinoiserie Tankard Bow, London, Circa 1760-1765 This superb and charmingly decorated soft-paste porcelain tankard is a quintessential artifact of the English Rococo period and the mid-18th-century fascination with Chinoiserie. Produced at the celebrated Bow factory in London, it embodies the ambitions of the nascent English porcelain industry to compete with the treasured, and costly, wares being imported from China. The Bow manufactory, founded circa 1747 in East London, even named its works "New Canton," a clear statement of its intent to emulate Chinese porcelain. This tankard is a perfect expression of that goal, though seen through a distinctly European lens. The painted scene is not a faithful depiction of Chinese life, but rather a fanciful and whimsical vision. It features elegantly attired figures conversing around a low table, flanked by a vase of flowers and a large, decorative bird perched on a blossoming branch. The use of a vibrant, rosy-hued palette for the bird is a direct imitation of the Chinese famille rose enamels that were the height of fashion. The quality and style of the painting are exceptionally fine, linking this piece to other important examples from the factory. The distinctive treatment of the tree branches, with delicate brown markings, is remarkably similar to that found on a cream-jug from the same period. Furthermore, the overall composition is closely related to a tankard held in the prestigious collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. As a rare survivor in excellent condition, this tankard serves as a valuable document of the artistic exchange and creative fantasy that defined the Chinoiserie style in Georgian England. Dimensions: 6 inches high x 5 3/4 inches wide (including handle) x 4 inches diameter (15.24 cm×14.61 cm×10.16 cm) Comparative Literature & References: For a cream-jug circa 1765 with a similarly rendered Chinese figure and tree, see Anton Gabszewicz, Made in New Canton: Bow Porcelain From The Collection of The London Borough of Newham, p. 61, #50. A tankard with very similar decoration is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London See also English Ceramic Circle Transactions, Vol. 2, No. 7, 1939, p. 84. (Ref: NY9033/IAMR)

Early Davenport Ironstone Mug Hand Painted Chinoiserie Pattern 659, circa 1815
By Davenport Porcelain
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a rare and early stone China (Ironstone) mug which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815 made by the Davenport factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England. The mug is straight sided similar to a coffee can and has a loop handle with an upper thumb rest. The pattern is number "659", which is one of Davenport's very few chinoiserie patterns. The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers. The mark on the base of the mug is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...
