Bottle Vase, Bow Porcelain Factory, circa 1747

About

Bottle, circa 1746-1748: Small thrown bottle vase of bulbous form with elongated neck and flaring trumpet top. Somewhat primitively painted in tones of a ‘sooty’ blue underglaze with a rambling plant rising from behind a fence among leaves and grasses, and with an indeterminate insect or flower head. Thinly potted; chalky body; thin silky glaze. Limited straw translucency. Base unglazed. H.4.5 in (11.5 cm). Provenance: Taylor Collection; Simon Spero, London, June 2002. The form and decoration of the bottle probably indicates an example pre-dating the ‘incised R mark’ group of the generally accepted earliest 2nd patent Bow wares. The bottle is one of a separated pair apparently otherwise unrecorded in English porcelain.
