About the Item

Piero Fornasetti: 'Tema e Variazioni' (Themes & Variations) Porcelain Plate, No. 200, "The Statue", With Original White Box This plate is a quintessential example of the wit, surrealism, and creative genius of one of the 20th century's most singular design talents, Piero Fornasetti. Description and Design This authentic porcelain plate is No. 200 from Piero Fornasetti's most famous and extensive series, "Tema e Variazioni" (Themes and Variations). The plate features a surreal and architectural transformation of its famous subject. The face of Lina Cavalieri appears as a giant neoclassical bust on a plinth, encased within a wooden construction scaffold, complete with a rope and hook. The crisp, black-and-white transfer print is a hallmark of the series, turning a functional object into a piece of conceptual art. The plate is presented with its original white Fornasetti box, a significant detail for collectors. Historical Background & Context 🧐 The Artist and The Idea: Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) was a visionary Milanese painter, sculptor, and designer who believed that a single idea could provide enough inspiration for infinite variations. His work is a universe of repeating motifs, but none is more famous than the face that adorns this plate. The Muse - Lina Cavalieri: In the 1950s, Fornasetti was leafing through a 19th-century French magazine when he was captivated by the face of Italian opera singer Lina Cavalieri. He was not interested in her fame, but in her face as a timeless archetype—a "quintessentially beautiful and classic image," as he put it, as enigmatic as the Mona Lisa. The "Themes and Variations" Series: Cavalieri's face became Fornasetti's ultimate canvas. He used it as the foundation for over 350 whimsical, surreal, and poetic transformations, of which this plate is a prime example. He fragmented her face, turned it into the sun, hid it behind a mask, and, as seen here, subjected it to surreal architectural deconstruction. The series became a lifelong meditation on the nature of an image and the boundless possibilities of creative interpretation. A Continuing Legacy: This plate, dating to the 1990s, was produced after Piero's death under the careful direction of his son, Barnaba Fornasetti. Barnaba has masterfully continued his father's workshop, faithfully reproducing these iconic designs and ensuring the enduring legacy of the Fornasetti name. Details Reference: For a discussion on the series, see Patrick Mauriès, Fornasetti: Designer of Dreams. Dimensions: 10 inches diameter x 1 1/2 inches high (25.4 cm×3.81 cm). (Ref: NY10483-npn)
