About the Item

The porcelain manufactory at Frankenthal in the Pfalz region of Germany is considered to be one of the foremost producers of porcelain figures outside of the Meissen factory. A young man, probably a gardener, carries a box of freshly picked blooms, whilst a mother and her daughter festoon an urn with a garland of delicately detailed flowers. Note especially the fine detailing of all three faces, even of the young woman, whose face is partly concealed from view. The group offered here is attributed to the Modellmeister Johan Adam Bauer (at Frankenthal c. 1772 - 1779). These figures, particularly their faces, bear similarities to a figure group sold by Christie's as a group from the Ludwigsburg factory (NY Sale 2071, lot 244, 2008), although here the base is naturalistically moulded, as though the three were in a garden, in contrast to the classical formality of the base of the Ludwigsburg piece. The ensemble shows a keen mastery of potting; th e presence of two air vents in the base mean that the figures of the two women were potted separately and the gardener stands without any bocage, which was often used to conceal supports. Provenance: A British Industrialist who built up an important collection of German porcelains, buying chiefly from the sales of Sotheby's and Christie's. In the family's keeping is an exhaustive volume created by the industrialist and cataloguing his collection. Signed/Inscribed/Dated: Underglaze Blue Mark CT (Carl Theodor) surmounted by a crown, and the numbers 78 to indicate 1778 The carriage charge is to indicate the insurance necessary should the purchaser be unable to view and collect the piece personally.Carriage and insurance to be discussed with the purchaser. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. The legs of the figured have been repaired at some time in the nineteenth century; flaking of the repair material is visible. There is a small firing crack to the man's jacket and to the underside of the piece.
