Lenox Aesthetic Movement Dinner Service W/ "Prunus" Sterling Silver Gilt Overlay

About the Item

This amazing service for 12 was made by Ceramic Art Company/ Lenox ca. 1890 and features sterling silver with a gold wash overlay in an iconic "Japonesque" prunus blossom pattern on a soft ivory ground. The borders are lined in silver and silver vases hold the undulating flowers. The set consists of dinner plates, luncheon plates, rare square dessert plates, bread and butter plates, cream soups and saucers and cups and saucers. Absolutely amazing and rare! Made exclusively for John Wanamaker. John Wanamaker Department Store, now Macy's, was the first department store in Philadelphia and one of the first in the U.S. It is a National Historic Landmark. Wanamaker's opened in 1910 with 12 floors and almost two million square feet. He was an American merchant and religious, civic and political figure, considered by some to be a proponent of advertising and a "Pioneer in marketing".
