About the Item

A lion, seated on its haunches, one paw up. Perhaps a heraldic reference; although the stump does not appear in heraldry, it is required in order to keep the paw in position during firing. This example is unusually fine for such an early piece, with well moulded and sculpted details,. enhanced by a thin, even glaze. A superb example from the dawn of English porcelain manufacture.
