Nantgarw Porcelain Dinner Plate, c1820

About the Item

Nantgarw Porcelain Dinner Plate, c1820 Additional information: Date : c1820 Period : George III/George IV Marks : Impressed NANT-GARW C.W. Origin : Nantgarw, South Wales Colour : overglaze polychrome enamelling and gilding Pattern : gilt dentile rim around a central polychrome floral bouquet and insects as below Features: lobed rim; moulded c-scrolls and rococo swags and flourishes to the lip in typical Nantgarw style; abbreviated moulded ribs fading to the well Condition : Excellent; no chips, cracks or flakes; some tiny pinprick glaze-bubbles to both sides, and three tiny discoloured imperfections on the lip. Restoration : none Dimensions : 3.5 cm high - 25.2 cm diameter Notes : This is a simplified version of a common Nantgarw decorative scheme; others that have passed through our hands having a single bouquet are augmented with small posies or floral sprigs to the rim or a linear detail around the inside edge of the lip - this is pared right down to the two constituent parts of a floral centrepiece and gilt rim decoration - with the exception of two extremely small insects on the lip, no more than 3 to 4mm in length. Elements such as this were often used to hide tiny defects in the glaze.
