A Nun, perhaps a theatrical figure. England, probably Plymouth, circa 1750
About the Item
An interesting soft-paste porcelain figure of a Dominican Nun, perhaps the theatrical figure Heloise.
Although the Nun appears in various versions in European and English porcelain, we have not been able to find another in this particular version; the rosary in her left hand, in particular, is unknown on other models.
A combination of the soft-paste body, the elimination of the more common makers, and (in particular) the open base, suggest a formerly unknown figure from the Plymouth factory.
