About the Item

Pearl Service also known as Bavarian Royal Service. A dinner service for 12 people, by the Royal Nymphenburg porcelain factory, designed circa 1792 by court sculptor Dominik Auliczek ( 1734-1804 ). Born in Bohemia he was appointed to the factory in 1763, he travelled to Vienna, Paris, London and Rome before introducing the neoclassical Louis XVI style to the Nymphenburg porcelain factory. The Perl service is considered to be a prime contribution to the art of German porcelain tableware, it was originally reserved exclusively for the royal household of Elector Carl Theodor of Bavaria. The design is a technical feat, its original name Perl, refers to the intricate raised beaded edge. Based on the shape of a dodecagon the plates and various serving dishes have 12 sides, an extra difficulty for the artisans working and the potters wheels. Each piece is a work of art, entirely hand crafted, at the center are hand painted monochrome grey landscapes reserves, each view framed with an engraved 24 carat gold band, surrounded with blue ribbons, finished with fine gold accents. In 1918 a large service was commissioned for King Ludwig III and his wife , a gift from their children for their wedding anniversary, the design acquired a new name: "Royal Bavarian". This service of 70 pieces comprises of: 12 dinner plates, 24.5 cm 12 starter/dessert plates , 21 cm 12 deep plates , 24.5 cm 12 crescent shaped bone plates, 21 cm 12 bread plates, 16cm 1 large sauceboat with fixed base 1 caviar cooler 1 tureen with lid 1 square serving dish 1 round serving dish 1 oval platter 38 cm 1 oval platter 44 cm 1 mustard pot with spoon 2 salt cellars This service is one of a few luxurious intricate porcelain series still produced to this day. The factory is located in the grounds of Nymphenburg Palace near Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The factory archives show that the pieces in this listing were made to order circa mid 1950's to early 1970's. As an indication of current retail value: the latest list price for a dinner plate is € 2'740, for a tureen € 30'000, for an exquisite mustard pot € 10'600.

1851 Imperial Vienna Porcelain 27 piece Service for 18, very rare
By Royal Vienna Porcelain
Located in San Francisco, CA
This extremely rare partial set of dinner service was produced at the Royal Vienna Factory in 1851 under the direction of Baron Leithner, ten years before the factory closed. During Leithner's direction, the factory and it's artists were still known for their splendid and expensive gilding which is displayed on each of the pieces in this set. I purchased this set in the later 1980s from Butterfield and Butterfield, and was told that it was consigned by the estate of a Austrian woman who brought the dishes over from Vienna. Purported the set was part of a very large set of dishes belonging to the household of the Empress Elizabeth...
