Pair of Plates, Warren Hastings Shape, Chelsea, circa 1755
About the Item
A pair of plates in ‘Warren Hastings’ shape, with fine rococo moulding, decorated with geese and other birds to the reserves; typical sprays and sprigs to the wells. The use of birds on this shape very rare; we usually see fables or landscapes.
A previous dealer's description has been attached to the back of one of the plates by a previous collector, which is perfectly acurate. This looks to have been clipped from an invoice.
A PAIR of fine CHELSEA PLATES WITH SHAPED RIMS and brown enamelled edges. The wide rims sharply moulded with three reserves i which are painted (1) game birds being pursued, (2) storks, ducks, etc, in flight. The moulding enamelled in fine purple. Alternating with these reserves are three panels of moulding in diamond-shaped lattice and leafy rococo scrolls. The deep centres brilliantly painted with a large bouquet of garden flowers and flower sprays in natural enamel colours. Red Anchor marks on both. Circa 1755.
