Pale Blue Worcester Porcelain Square Dishes Made in England circa 1820

About the Item

We are pleased to offer this pair of early 19th century pale blue Flight Barr Worcester square-shaped dishes with glided, gadrooned edges. In the center of each dish are hand-painted sprays of beautifully painted pink and purple flowers on a white ground (see image #3 for a close-up of the flowers). The soft blue color of the border is enhanced by the pink and purple flowers. We also have in the shop two pairs of oval dishes in this Worcester pattern. They are listed on 1stdibs 1stDibs Reference #: 1501088665884 the price for each of the pair of ovals $800 per pair. Background In 1783, the Worcester factory was purchased by Thomas Flight—the former London sales agent for the concern—for £3,000. He let his two sons run the concern, with John Flight taking the lead role. In 1788 George III, following a visit to the company, granted it a royal warrant, and it became known as the "Royal Porcelain Works". Martin Barr joined the firm as a partner in 1792; porcelains of this period are often identified by an incised capital "B" and, later, by more elaborate printed and impressed marks. Thomas Flight died in 1800, leaving the factory in the hands of his son, Joseph Flight and Martin Barr. In addition to the warrant granted by George III, royal warrants were also issued by the Prince of Wales in 1807, and the Princess of Wales in 1808. According to the Worcester porcelain museum "during the late 18th and early 19th centuries Chinese porcelain was a great status symbol. Beginning in the early 1800's Worcester produced a magnificent alternative, whiter with brighter colors and more readily available, becoming the height of fashion. The customer accounts of this period would read like a 'who's who' of the day. Rich personalized services were made for the wealthiest customers including, Tzar Alexander I, The Duke of York, King George III, King William IV, The Duke of Clarence, The Imam of Muscat, The Marquis of Buckingham and the Nabob of Oude."
