About the Item

A refined pair of French porcelain pedestal compotes, likely Paris or Limoges manufacture, dating to the late 19th century. Each features a shallow circular dish elevated on a turned baluster stem and flaring circular foot. The surfaces are coated in a vivid bleu céleste glaze and richly adorned with matte and burnished gilt decoration depicting fruiting branches, butterflies, and insects, arranged in a naturalistic pattern. The central reserves are left white, creating a strong contrast against the saturated turquoise ground. The stems are ornamented with applied white beaded rings, adding dimension and elegance to the form, while the bases repeat the gilt floral motifs, encircled by a gilt rim with raised white enamel accents. The underside of one compote bears a painted decorator’s mark and number in red enamel, typical of Parisian porcelain firms working during the late 19th century. The combination of the deep blue ground and restrained gilding reflects the influence of mid-19th-century French decorative tastes inspired by Sèvres but produced by independent Parisian workshops. These compotes would have served as decorative table pieces, likely for fruit or confectionery. Measures: 9.5" w x 6.75" h.
