About the Item

The pair of consists of two enormous hexagonal vases; they are richly decorated with elaborate cobalt blue floral designs under glass on a white background; the two lids are decorated with the sculpture of two dogs, animals full of symbolism and portraits in many poses; those depicted, in China, are called shi, which means "lion" or shishi, which means "stone lion". They resemble both the Chow breed and the Shih Tzu breed, from which they are called "Fo dogs". They are also called Chinese lions, guardian dogs, or temple stone dogs. The dog occupies 11th position in the Chinese zodiac. 2018 was a Chinese year of the dog, as well as 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006, and the next will be in 2030. People born under the sign of the dog are loyal and honest, lovable and kind, but also cautious and prudent. The seal mark placed on the bottom of the two vases indicates that they were made during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911); comparing the mark of the vases with an older mark (see photo), we notice that our mark is well outlined and clearly readable, so this element and the careful manufacture of the vases lead us to say that they were produced in the last years of the dynasty that is between 1908 and 1910. The Qing dynasty was the last Chinese dynasty and its fall in 1912 at the hands of the Xinhai Revolution marked the end of China's bi-millennial imperial history and the birth of modern China. It must be said, however, that Chinese porcelain craftsmanship reached the peak of its development during the Qing dynasty, with more than 100,000 craftsmen in the field; porcelain of this era includes "white and blue", wuacai, "sky blue", sunsacai, etc...At this time, Chinese porcelain possession was a source of great pride among the people of China itself, but also in the rest of the world. The two imposing vases are exceptional from an aesthetic point of view, true works of art; the contrast between blue and white that characterizes them is simply wonderful, their slender shape is so elegant and full of charm.
