About the Item
Rare Small Size Yellow Ground First Period Worcester Porcelain Basket, c1760
Circular baskets with the sides made from interlocking circles were first made by Worcester in 1758. The florets on the external surfaces are not merely decorative - they were applied to strengthen the intersections once the basket had been pierced. Items of this nature are often referred to as "chestnut baskets" but this seems to be a generic term, applied retrospectively, and without an enormous amount of regard to accuracy...
Additional information:
Date : c1770
Period : George III
Origin : Worcester, England
Colour : Polychrome flowers and sprays. The flowers which make up the larger 'bouquet' to the centre of the well are reproduced as smaller sprays around the pierced sides and rim. Puce and green applied florets to the outside of the intersections, with a pale yellow external wash; it is the polychrome sprays which give rise to the possible Rogers attribution - they typify his style
