Set of 2 Chinese Export Vases, Warriors in Kangxi Style, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a rather stunning set of two tall vases made in China for export to the West in the 19th century. The vases were made in the Kangxi style of the early 18th century. The vases are potted in heavy greyish and very smooth porcelain. They were painted with a very lively warrior scene mirroring each other for extra dramatic effect when displayed. There are well-dressed warriors if grand stature on horses with beautiful faces and trampling hooves, and there are much smaller foot soldiers fighting with just a lance and a shield. There is a noticeable difference in size between the men on horses and the simple foot soldier. In the background is a mountainous landscape with a road or river cutting through it, and each party carries a flag; one in red, the other in green. The vases are beautifully painted and the lively figures seem to move when you look at them for a while. This is a 19th century "respectful copy" of a well-known 18th century Kangxi style. These types of copies are not meant as fakes, but more as an honouring of well-known styles from the past. One of the vases has a Kangxi leaf-mark at the bottom, the other doesn't. Warrior figures were a popular subject in Chinese painting, given that the Chinese Empire had to be fought for bit by bit, there has always been a lot of respect for the warriors who pieced together what is now a huge territory. These vases were made for the commercial trade in the 19th century, they were very popular in the Victorian home to stand on the chimney piece. Provenance: from the collection of a Dutch collector, who purchased these in the late 1940s-early 1950s at a local Dutch auction. Condition report: The vases are in beautiful condition without any wear or visible damage. One vases must have had a hairline on the inside of the neck as there is some emulsion from a restoration; this is hardly visible and only on the inside (see second-last picture). Other than this there is no damage and there is no wear whatsoever. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
