Tea Bowl & Saucer with Insects. Worcester, Giles, circa 1760
About the Item
Tea bowl and saucer, in remarkably fine porcelain; decorated in London at the Giles workshop, with typical butterflies, caterpillars and plants.
James Giles was a British ceramic painter and gilder who established a workshop in London in the mid 18th century. He is known for his high-quality, hand-painted ceramics, which were produced in his workshop and sold to a wealthy clientele.
He decorated blanks, largely from Worcester; although once Worcester stopped supplying him around 1770 and doing polychrome decoration themselves, he sourced wares from various other makers.
