About the Item
A fun and colorful English Chamberlains Worcester "Dragons in Compartments" heart or ruyi shaped enameled soft paste porcelain dish, early 19th century, circa 1810, Worcester, England.
The pattern on this dish is known by several names, including "Dragons in Compartments", "Bengal Tiger", and "Kylin in Compartments". Based off an 17th/18th century Kangxi Chinese export pattern, the bright colors and fanciful beasts were a hit in West. The pattern was produced by several factories, including Worcester and Coalport.
Decorated in an all over famille verte palette, the dish is hand painted in bright enamels of green, coral, purple, blue and yellow, with gilt highlights.
The dish of unusual shape. In the west, it would be referred to as heart shaped. In the Asia, they would say it is a ruyi head or lingzhi shape - a shape associated with longevity. The interior of the dish divided into four "compartments". Two compartments feature fantastic beasts. The other two compartments with scholarly arrangements of vases and flowers. All centered around a large stylized chrysanthemum bloom.
The back undecorated. With a collection sticker from Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge.
