19th Century Islamic Blue and White Fritware Pottery Plate Signed by Maker

About the Item

A mysterious, antique blue and white pottery plate. This is a fritware plate, hand-painted with a floral motif in underglaze cobalt blue, possibly an imitation of a Chinese or even an European/Delft composition. Although the exact origine of this plate is unknown, we can tell from the marks on the back that it was made in a muslim region where written Arabic was used. The plate is signed in Arabic "Work by Hassen" and dated 1285 in lunar islamic years, which corresponds to approximately 1868 in the Gregorian calendar. The plate is handmade and thus has a slightly irregular shape. The hand-painted blue decor on the edge has bled (see photos) most likely because the glaze was applied before the paint had had the time to dry completely. Looking at the back of the plate, we can see that the glaze has been applied in a rather thick layer which also confirms the artisanal making of this plate. The plate is in a fair antique condition. It has no major cracks or repairs. However, it does have some minor chips missing around the rim and the some crazing on the surface (see photos). Dimension: diameter 25.5 cm/ 10", height 4.5 cm/ 1 3/4". Weight: 565 g/ 1.25 lbs.
