About the Item

A fine and large Chinese brown ochre glazed stoneware storage jar, commonly known as a Martaban or Martavan jar. Shoulders decorated with pearls and five lion heads molded in relief, China, mid-19th century. A beautiful and fascinating example of a Martaban jar in good condition. Martaban jars are common stoneware storage pots named after the Arabic pronunciation of the Burmese port on the gulf of Pegu through which many of these vessels were traded. They were primarily made to hold water, wine, edible oils and pickles on long sea-voyages.
