Dated Creamware Punch Bowl, Leeds, 1787
About the Item
A documentary punch bowl, decorated with transfer prints and enameling, dated and inscribed for D. Walker. Unmarked, but this class of dated creamware with enameled prints belongs to Leeds.
"When this you see remember me. Tho many Leagues we distance be. 1787"
The quote "When this you see, remember me. Though many leagues we distance be" is a line from a popular English folk song called "The Parting Glass." The song is a traditional farewell and was often sung at the end of a gathering or celebration as a way of wishing good fortune to those who were departing. The line serves as a reminder to those who hear it to think of the singer and the memories they shared, even if they are now far apart. The song has been popular for many centuries and has been recorded by numerous artists in many different styles.
A particularly suitable line, as it would have become visible as the punch was drunk and the time to depart came near.
