Georgian Toby Jug - Wood C1785
About the Item
A fine early toby jug, from the Wood family of potters. Traditional form, seated and holding a foaming jug of beer, dressed in clothing of the day.
Toby jugs originated in the mid 18th century in Staffordshire. The name perhaps comes from Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth night; although I think both the jug and Sir Toby got their names from the song "The Brown Jug", in which Toby Filpot appears.
Toby jugs represent an interesting intersection of utility and art, capturing historical and cultural elements in their designs. Their enduring appeal lies in their craftsmanship, characterful designs, and the rich tradition they embody.
