A German or Austrian majolica pottery figure of a gnome, circa 1880
About the Item
This most unusual and very pleasing majolica pottery figure was made in Germany or Austria circa 1880 and it depicts a happy rosy cheeked gnome lying down on his front with his head raised supported by his hands from bent elbows. He has a happy expression with a long beard and a red peaked hat. He is watching some pleasing activity whilst relaxing on a grassy landscape which forms the raised rectangular plinth. This unusual figure is very well modelled and hand decorated with rich translucent glazes. It is in very good condition and it bears an impressed number on the underside of 73 which could possibly be a pattern number or date code.
