Large Japanese Kutani Scenic Charger
About the Item
The plaque is signed on the back by the studio or artist and "Kutani".
This piece was inspired by earlier Seto ware oil plates decorated in the so-called "picture" style.
The scene depicted shows a high altitude mountainous area, with snow on the slopes of the peaks.
The mountains themselves are painted with various shades of thick cobalt blue, in a very stylized,
abstracted and graphic style, very much in the manner of the great Japanese woodblock prints by landscape artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai. The sky of the scene is completely gilded making the work look like a fine example of lacquer ware or lacquered wood.
