About the Item

Large Raku Ceramic Vessel by Andrew Berends This contemporary art pottery vase or vessel is handcrafted by noted Vermont ceramicist, Andrew Bernends. The piece. is signed on the vessel's base. The surface of the vase is characterized by a smoky, natural appearance with shades of black, dark gray, and earthy tones, ranging from beige to soft green and even light reddish hues. The uneven color patches are typical of the raku process, which involves removing the piece from the kiln while it is still hot and placing it in a combustible material (such as sawdust or leaves) to create unique, random patterns and crackling effects. The vase features abstract, organic etched or carved lines on its surface. The etchings expose lighter shades of the clay beneath, creating contrast with the darker, smoky areas of the vase. Berends is renowned for his mastery of raku firing, a traditional Japanese technique that yields unpredictable, organic textures and colors. He enjoys exploring the fine line between art and craft, as well as the interplay between historical techniques and modern aesthetics. His work often incorporates elements from both worlds, respecting ceramics as a traditional art form while pushing its boundaries into the contemporary. Dimensions: 12.5"h x 10.5"dia Condition: Good.
