About

Unique bowl created by Geert Lap. Based on the shape and color, this bowl can be dated circa 1988. In 1987, Lap began using a terra sigilata glaze on his stoneware. This terra sigilata glaze gives a beautiful semi-matte satiny sheen and also provides a watertight surface. The name 'terra sigilata' refers to this watertight property. Terra sigilata, which comes from Etruscan ceramics, means 'sealed earth'. This light green bowl is signed 'Lap' at the bottom.

Geert Lap (1951-2017) was a Dutch ceramist, known for his Minimalist approach to ceramics. The work of Lap is distinguished by its seeming simplicity and perfect craftsmanship. His ceramics have a timeless quality. With each piece he created, Lap tried to come closer to the essence of the thrown form.

Lap studied at the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost from 1974 to 1976. He continued his studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie from 1976 to 1979, where he was taught by Jan van der Vaart. Van der Vaart's experimental work method and clear language of forms was of great influence on Lap. In Amsterdam Lap shared a studio with Barbara Nanning for two years, and in 1980 he started his own studio. Later, Lap lectured at the Design Academy Eindhoven (1985-86) and at the Minerva Academy in Groningen (1985-1987).
