About the Item

A mosaic pattern plate in saltglaze earthenware, with a an early transfer-print of the Royal Arms used during this period. This coat of arms was used by both George II and George III; I would guess the service would have been commissioned by George III around the time of his accession or coronation. Salt-glazed pottery was a popular type of ceramic in Europe during the 18th century. This technique involves throwing salt into the kiln during firing, which creates a matt, opaque white surface on the pottery. This was one of the many attempts at imitating Chinese porcelain made at the time, and was an important phase in the development of English ceramics. The story goes that, short of wood, German potters used packing cases from herring to fire their kilns. The salt on the wood resulted in a fine, even white glaze, which they then learned to imitate and control. It's a lovely story, and it would be nice if it turned out to be true.
