Wedding Plate in cremware, Wedgwood C1786

About the Item

A creamware plate, with transfer printed decoration. From a service probably ordered to commemorate the wedding of John Peter and Ann Du Port, of Guernsey. The plate is of plain creamware in the Royal Shape, later called Bewick. It is decorated with a bucolic print known as "Landscape with Oak Borders", by Guy Green of Sadler and Green, who did a lot of transfer printing for Wedgwood at this time. Sadler and Green reserved certain plates for Wedgwood, the flowers used on the border of this plate are an example of these. Guernsey is an island located in the English Channel, near the coast of Normandy, France. It is the second largest of the Channel Islands, and is a British Crown dependency, meaning that it is not part of the United Kingdom but is self-governing. Guernsey has its own parliament, the States of Guernsey, which is responsible for the island's domestic affairs. The island is known for its mild climate, beautiful beaches, and historic architecture. The island has a population of around 67,000 people.
