About the Item

A very unusual Aesthetic Movement art pottery silver mounted mug modeled in relief with thirteen grotesque faces and dating from around 1880. The finely potted mug is heavily relief molded with thirteen square panels each modeled as a grotesque face. Our research suggests that this could represent the Thirteen faces of the Devil or an interpretation thereof. The faces in their grotesque manner or not disimilar to those produced by the Martin Brothers. The mug is finished in rich brown and grey glazes and has a loop handle to one side. The mug has a silver rim impressed with London silver assay marks dating it to 1880. The mug has impressed makers initials P.J. to the base. The mug is offered in excellent original condition without loss, damage or repair. There are three kiln stilt marks around the foot rim of the mug one of which has resulted in a small chip to the edge of the rim which has been over glazed.
