About the Item

This exquisite 17-piece dinner service is a rare early example of the Asiatic Pheasants pattern, produced by Podmore, Walker & Co. around 1840. A precursor to later iterations under Wedgwood, this set captures the delicate artistry of English transferware at its peak. Unlike later versions, this early edition is distinguished by its scalloped edges, soft ivory glaze, and a more intricate transfer design. Each piece is adorned with a richly detailed pattern of trailing peonies and garden birds — the namesake "Asiatic Pheasants" — captured mid-flight among flowering branches. The transfer is rendered in a soft cobalt blue that has mellowed beautifully with time, offering a warm, lived-in elegance that collectors adore. This is not merely dinnerware — it's a fragment of 19th-century domestic life. With fewer and fewer complete services surviving intact, especially in such well-preserved condition, this set represents both a decorative investment and a tactile connection to British ceramic history. Whether styled on a wall or table, its presence is commanding yet gentle — the kind of timeless appeal that transcends trends. The plates are solid yet refined, with a gentle weight and finely potted body typical of early Staffordshire earthenware. The glaze bears a subtle network of crazing — a hallmark of genuine age — and a slightly warm tone that complements the cool blue floral pattern. The hand-applied transfer gives each piece a uniquely human touch, with slight variations that add charm and authenticity. Podmore, Walker & Co. operated in Tunstall, Staffordshire from 1834 until 1859, when the firm merged into Wedgwood. Their Asiatic Pheasants pattern became one of the most popular designs of the Victorian era, but early examples like this — pre-Wedgwood and printed in lighter, more ethereal blue tones — are now increasingly rare. This set predates the industrial standardization that followed, giving it a handmade spirit and historic integrity.
