About the Item

Japanned onto tinplated steel, of dished form, with radiused corners and pierced handles, decorated in gilt with Chinoiserie scenes of court life. Dimensions: 26 in / 66 cm x 33 in / 84 cm. After the invention of the rolling mill, which allowed thin malleable steel with a uniformly flat surface to be produced and the discovery in Germany of a tin plating process, Thomas Allgood of Pontypool, South Wales utilised the local resources of steel, in conjunction with his discovery of an amalgam that could be fired and after firing, giving a jet black field that was capable of being decorated, began the Pontypool and later, Usk factories. The Chinoiserie fashion espoused by the Prince Regent was used as a basis of decorating a wide range of domestic articles, including tea sets, trays and jardinières, & etc.
