About the Item

A complete table set steeped in history, this Spode Chinese Rose dinner service is a rare and valuable find for collectors and hosts alike. Produced by Copeland Spode, one of England’s most celebrated makers of fine porcelain, the Chinese Rose pattern dates back to the early 20th century and reflects the enduring fascination with Chinoiserie in European design. The pattern itself is instantly recognisable: richly hand-painted florals in deep rose pinks, emerald greens, and soft blues, framed by delicate black detailing and a scalloped green rim. Unlike transferware that dominated English tableware, many elements of this service carry the painter’s hand, making each piece subtly unique. What makes this set especially valuable is its completeness and variety of forms—not only dinner plates and serving platters but also harder-to-find pieces like terrines, a gravy boat with underplate, sugar bowl, and multiple serving dishes. Such a large and intact service rarely comes to market, making it ideal both as a collector’s heirloom and as an extraordinary way to set a table. Backstamp History “Copeland Late Spode”: This was the mark used by the firm W.T. Copeland & Sons after they took over Spode. This wording was commonly used between about 1847 and 1970, with different variations in lettering style. Registration Number Rd No. 628980: British registration numbers help date patterns. Rd No. 628980 corresponds to 1913. So, your Chinese Rose piece was registered in 1913, and the style of backstamp suggests it was produced sometime in the 1910s–1930s.
