Assembled Pair of Wedgwood Cress or Strawberry Dishes, Late 18th C
About the Item
An assembled pair of Wedgwood cress or strawberry dishes, Two Piece; Footed Pierced Dish with Stand. Late 18th c. This would have been used to serve watercress or strawberries after dinner. The strainers would be used mainly at the end of the dinner, when fruits and various pastries were served. The red of the strawberries would have looked beautiful in contrast to the white color of the strainers. The strawberries were placed on the strainer so you could rinse the fruits under a pump then placed on the stand and directly to the table. Another feature of the use of a strainers was that the fruits remain fresh longer since they were on a ventilated plate. The strainers and conforming underplates are shaped like a "Parallelogram" with waisted sides.
