About the Item

This WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) tray, dating back to around 1900 to 1918, captures the early artistry and quality that WMF became renowned for. The use of Britannia metal, rare for its durability and rich silver tone, highlights the piece’s exclusivity. The repoussé design at the center depicts two John Dory Fish, perhaps symbolizing family and continuity—a theme often celebrated in 19th-century decorative art. The opposing end designs, which resemble fish fins or ginkgo leaves, add a refined naturalism to the piece. Each detail, from the intricate scales on the fish to the fan-like leaf or fin motifs, reflects the craftsmanship associated with WMF’s early work. This tray’s historical charm and artistry make it a cherished collector's piece and a testament to WMF's legacy. Marked by the inscription "WMF" (or "W.M.F.") Under Albert Mayer's direction, WMF embraced Art Nouveau and expanded internationally by 1914, with factories in Germany, Poland, and Austria. Founded by Daniel Straub, the company first cataloged its silver and glass pieces in the late 1850s, creating items like candle holders, punch bowls, and cutlery. WMF's acquisition of Orivit AG in 1905 further enriched its offerings, earning the brand worldwide acclaim and awards, even gaining recognition from German Emperor Wilhelm II. The additional marks: "B" means Britannia metal, a zinc-antimony-copper alloy which served as a base metal for silver plating, "I/O" means normal silver coating which is equivalent to 1 gram of silver per 1 dm2 of base metal surface, "OX" means oxidized finish. This mark was in use from around 1900 until about 1918. Marking on platter: ( B) Britannia metal base B = Britannia metal is a tin and antimony alloy.) Ostrich mark I/O - OX = Dimensions: 25 1/2" W x 14" L x 1" H Germany, 1910
