About the Item

Mr. Giallo is opening his personal vault to sell a collection of his treasured antiques he's held on for so long. About item Item originally bought by Vito at Sotheby's Auction, late 1980s. More on Vito Born and raised New York artist, Vito Giallo, turned one of the best antique dealers sold to the who’s who of New York City - think Elton John, Andre Leon Talley, Greta Garbo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Franz Kilne, Mark Rothko (to name a few) and of course a daily customer of his, Andy Warhol. Mr. Giallo worked as an illustrator and graphic artist at Wolgang Beck Studios in 1952, where he suggested to use Mr. Beck’s space to open The Loft Gallery. There was Andy Warhol’s first show, The Origamis, along with other commercial artists, Nathan Gluck, including Mr. Giallo. He was Warhol’s first apprentice and first to give Warhol a show in 1954. Vito’s passion for antiques and their stories lead him to leave commercial art and Warhol to later open a little shop on Madison Ave across the Carlyle Hotel that brought in every artist, actor, politician, doctor, writer in. A frequent buyer (we’re talking every two weeks) from Sotheby’s plus Giallo’s exquisite taste made him the go-to for the best antiques in the city! Mr. Giallo is 92yrs young and currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. At 91, Giallo is still very active. He was recently featured in NYT, W, Elle, and debuted his highly anticipated jewelry collaboration all in April 2022 with BK Jeweler, Catbird, and is currently working on launching his memoir/book! With the success of these recent projects, Giallo is opening his personal vault, to sell a collection of his treasured antiques he's held on for so long. He’s a very special New York treasure.

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Russian silver drinks tray; an addition to our ornamental Russian silverware collection. This fine antique Russian silver tray has an oval shaped form. The surface of the drinks tray is embellished with engraved floral and foliate sprays incorporating eight circular vacant cartouches subdivided by rosette designs. The ornamentation to the tray encompasses a large vacant circular cartouche. The raised rounded border is ornamented with applied moulded decoration to the rim. This impressive Russian silver tray is fitted with a plain rounded hallmarked handle to either end. The hallmarks struck to the underside of this tray include: Maker's mark: ?.?.? (untraced) Assay mark: A.C , 1871 Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks) City mark: St George slaying the dragon (Moscow, Russia) This assayer could be either Aggey Grigoryevich Svechin or Aleksandr Alekseyevich Smirnov 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver Condition This antique tray is a very good gauge of silver, excellent quality and in exceptional condition in keeping with age.
