Antique Pair Victorian 5 Light Candelabra Elkington 19th Century

About the Item

This is a stunning pair of English antique neoclassic design Victorian silver plated, five light, four-branch table candelabra, circa 1890 in date, and each bearing the makers mark of the renowned English silversmiths Elkington & Co. The candelabra’s each feature scroll design branches with detachable sconces and exquisite classical Adam Revival styling. They have classically dressed maiden columns with trailing garland decoration, and they are raised on heptagon bases. The attention to detail is absolutely fantastic and they are certain to attract attention wherever they are placed. Condition: In excellent condition with clear makers marks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 50 x Width 33 x Depth 33 Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 8 inches x Width 1 foot, 1 inch x Depth 1 foot, 1 inch Elkington & Co was a silver manufacturer from Birmingham, England. The firm was founded by George Richards Elkington and his brother, Henry Elkington, in the 1830s. It operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated as Elkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently as Elkington & Co. from 1861 until 1963. It was then taken over by British Silverware, Ltd. In 1971 British Silverware, Ltd. became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd. Over the course of history it became very successful and was one of the prime producers of silver plating. Elkington received various royal warrants of appointments. One of their most famous pieces is the electrotype copy of the Jerningham Wine Cooler, at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

A very fine & impressively large silver plated soup tureen by Elkington & Company of London with a capacity to hold 4 quarts. The substantial oval body having open handles, richly decorated with embossed & engraved foliate motifs & centered by blank foliate cartouches, the conforming lid bearing engraved heraldic crests. Raised overall upon a stepped oval foot, with the underside bearing impressed factory marks for Elkington & Co., together with date letter for 1884. In extremely good overall condition, and priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace. ELKINGTON & COMPANY: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover and patent the silver plating process in the 1830's. They were subsequently awarded Royal warrants to several members of the British Royal Family including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary & King George VI.
