Beautiful ice bucket in the precious ground crystal; the shaped handle, the frame on the edge and the lid finely engraved, are Silver Plated; for its execution has been used crystal with a percentage of lead of 30% (a material, developed in England by George Ravenscroft in the second half of the seventeenth century), very bright and transparent; The bucket has been embellished with graceful and delicate floral grindings in perfect Victorian style, made by hand and with meticulous care using small circular stone wheels, while the large stars and the pods starting from the bottom have been cut, ground and polished; with these old and complex techniques, the Mastercraftsman has created a pleasant contrast with extraordinary reflections; the sturdy handle is shaped with refinement and the lid is finely hand engraved with Victorian motifs. Inside the lid is a mark certifying that the item was made in 1858 by silversmith Joseph Mappin & Brothers in the city of Sheffield. The company traces its origins back to 1775 when Jonathan Mappin opened a silverware workshop in Sheffield, an important center of the English silver trade. Over time, other family members joined the company, which became "Mappin & Brothers", producing various silverware, flatware, and mounted crystals in Sterling Silver and Silver Plated. In 1862 Mappin was also joined by his brother-in-law George Webb and thus was born "Mappin Webb & Co." whose importance and reputation quickly spread throughout the United Kingdom and the world. Our ice bucket, with its delightful and graceful shape, tells us these wonderful stories and is a unique identity item full of elegance and sophistication. The bucket is in excellent condition. Appointed the Crown Jeweler in 2012, Mappin & Webb is one of the most widely recognized makers of silver and luxury goods in the world. Mappin & Webb’s origins are rooted in Jonathan Mappin’s workshop in Sheffield. He opened in 1775 with the intent to serve British society with the highest quality silverware ever made. His son and grandson, both named Joseph, carried on his vision until the mid-19th century when his four great-grandsons incorporated the business into Mappin Brothers Ltd. and embarked on a substantial expansion of the firm.

Nearing 1860, two of the great-grandsons, eldest Sir William Mappin and youngest John Mappin, left to pursue other opportunities. John opened his own business, Mappin & Company, and was joined two years later by his brother-in-law George Webb. Webb passed away in 1868 — the same year that saw the family form Mappin & Webb Co.

Webb’s name lived on in the company even after 1889 when the company became Mappin & Webb Ltd. In 1897, Mappin & Webb were granted their first Royal Warrant as silversmiths to Queen Victoria. The firm has been a holder of Royal Warrants since then.

Mappin & Webb supplied soldiers in the battle of Omdurman with their acclaimed Campaign watch. The company also supported wartime efforts during both World Wars in their enormous factory in Sheffield. Today Mappin & Webb is among the most prominent makers of Sheffield silver in the world.
