A rare and highly distinctive late Victorian Betjemann patent-lock spirit decanter, dating to circa 1890, featuring a substantial silver-plated mount, elaborate hobnail and window-cut glass decoration, an original faceted stopper and its original working key. This exceptional decanter is an outstanding example of the ingenious luxury objects associated with Betjemann & Sons of London, renowned for incorporating patented locking mechanisms into finely made furniture, cabinets, boxes and decorative objects. The decanter is particularly impressive for its heavy, highly faceted cut-glass body, decorated with an intricate combination of rounded hobnail cutting and open geometric “window” panels. The extensive faceting creates exceptional brilliance and allows the glass to catch and reflect light from every angle. The underside is finished with a star-cut base, while the original stopper is similarly faceted and carefully proportioned to the body. The Betjemann Patent Lock The defining feature is the ingenious Betjemann patent locking mechanism, designed to prevent unauthorised access to the contents of the decanter. The original key is present and remains functional. When the key is gently turned clockwise, the locking mechanism moves aside, releasing the stopper and providing access to the decanter. To secure the decanter again, the locking component can be gently returned towards the stopper. This combination of finely cut glass and a working proprietary locking mechanism makes the piece particularly desirable to collectors of Victorian glass, mechanical antiques, silver-plated objects and Betjemann patent wares. The lock also reflects the Victorian fascination with ingenious mechanisms and luxury entertaining objects. Betjemann's patented mechanisms were incorporated into a variety of sophisticated domestic objects, including jewellery boxes, bookslides, inkwells, cigarette boxes and the celebrated Betjemann tantalus...
