About the Item

This extraordinary vessel is a silver-plated trophy/tankard in a highly stylized Art Nouveau form with strong neoclassical influence. The lid is topped with a helmeted classical figure, most likely Athena/Minerva, the Greek/Roman goddess of wisdom and war. This directly evokes neoclassical themes. The helmet has a plumed crest, reinforcing its warrior symbolism and referencing ancient Greek or Roman military design. The elongated conical body is asymmetrically wrapped in flowing, ribbon-like drapery, which is stylized in true Art Nouveau fashion. The swirling scrollwork near the top and the dramatic, sweeping curves suggest movement and organic elegance—hallmarks of the Art Nouveau aesthetic (ca. 1890–1910). The body also exhibits a hammered or planished texture, giving it a handmade, tactile quality that was favored in Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau). The base with ornate spade or leaf-like feet reflects medieval revival influence, which was sometimes merged with Art Nouveau to create pieces with mythical or heroic ambiance. he handle is sharply geometric, forming a contrast to the flowing lines of the body—possibly a nod to emerging Secessionist or early Art Deco trends.
