Very Good Pair of 19th Century Silver Plated Wine Coasters by Elkington & Co.
About the Item
A very handsome pair of mid-19th century silver plated wine bottle coasters by Elkington & Company of London, showing swelled and pierced latticework bodies rising from turned satinwood bases centred by silver plated roundels engraved with stags head Heraldic crests (possibly for the Roberts family).
The plated rims on both bases bearing makers marks for Elkington & Company, together with date marks for 1861 on one coaster and 1862 on the other.
The use of satinwood for the bases on these fine wine coasters is relatively rare, as fruitwood such as walnut was most often used, further illustrating the high level of quality that Elkington & Company are known for.
ELKINGTON BIO: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover & patent the silver-plating process in the 1830s. They were subsequently awarded Royal warrants to several members of the British Royal Family including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary and King George VI.
Elkington & Company were also the suppliers of flatware to the British Royal Yacht ‘Britannia’ as well as the luxury dining sections of the Titanic.
