About the Item

This is a superb antique Victorian silver plated and cut glass biscuit barrel, circa 1870 in date. The biscut barrel bears the maker's mark of the renowned silversmith and retailer, Elkington & Co. This delightful piece features a diamond cut glass biscuit container which is suspended on four silver plated columns decorated with stunning cherubs and inter-linking swags of rock roses. The separate domed cover has engraved floral decoration, a bone pinecone finial and a hinged lid. The biscuit barrel is raised on four charming paw feet. It could be used for storing biscuits or a variety of sweets. Add some extra taste to your table while taking tea with this extraordinary Elkington and Co's biscuit barrel. Condition: In excellent condition, with no dents, damage or repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 24 x width 18 x depth 18 Dimensions in inches: Height 9 inches x width 7 inches x depth 7 inches Elkington & Co was a silver manufacturer from Birmingham, England. The firm was founded by George Richards Elkington and his brother, Henry Elkington, in the 1830s. It operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated as Elkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently as Elkington & Co. from 1861 until 1963. It was then taken over by British Silverware, Ltd. In 1971 British Silverware, Ltd. became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd. Over the course of history it became very successful and was one of the prime producers of silver plating. Elkington received various royal warrants of appointments. One of their most famous pieces is the electrotype copy of the Jerningham Wine Cooler, at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

A very fine & impressively large silver plated soup tureen by Elkington & Company of London with a capacity to hold 4 quarts. The substantial oval body having open handles, richly decorated with embossed & engraved foliate motifs & centered by blank foliate cartouches, the conforming lid bearing engraved heraldic crests. Raised overall upon a stepped oval foot, with the underside bearing impressed factory marks for Elkington & Co., together with date letter for 1884. In extremely good overall condition, and priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace. ELKINGTON & COMPANY: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover and patent the silver plating process in the 1830's.
