19th Century Italian Milanese Neoclassical Silver Oil and Vinegar Cruet Set

About the Item

Antique Milanese silver oil cruet consisting of an oval tray supported by four cast zoomorphic paw shaped feet; the edge of the tray is a ribbon decorated by two different shapes of palmette, the same pattern ornates the cruet holders and stopper holders. The bottles are supported by three female caryatids while the lstopper holders are supported by a cast mouth of a fish. The central stem has a very light frame consisting of two shaped profiles containing cast floral elements. The two cruets with handles have three acid-etched greeks and ground eight-pointed stars; throughout the bottle there are multiple bevelled stars. One of the two caps has a chip on the edge. The cruet is marked with globe and the seven trions for the silver title (800/000); the mark with the plow indicates the Assay Office of the State of Milan and finally the silversmith’s mark which, despite being worn, bears the letters S and G interspersed with the symbol of death a skull with crossbones, identified by the G. Sambonet, (Milan 1987, page 203) in the successor of Gerolamo Gatti who died in 1828 and is not better identified. Ultimately the cruet was made in Milan between 1828 and 1872 in 800/000 silver by the silversmith who continued the activity of Gerolamo Gatti. The cruet is in good condition. Except the chip on the glass cap, the item is in good age related condition. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti. The shipping may require additional 2-3 handling weeks to require and get the license according to the final destination of the artwork.
