Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Tortoise Inkwell (1903)

A magnificent, fine and impressive, large and rare antique Edwardian English cast sterling silver tortoise ink stand; part of our diverse collection of antique inkwells.
This magnificent and rare antique Edwardian English cast sterling silver ink stand has been realistically modelled in the form of a tortoise.
The large body of the ink stand has been embellished with fine details reproducing the tortoise's skin and anatomical features.
This magnificent antique inkwell is fitted with an impressive hinged hallmarked sterling silver cover reflecting the shape of the tortoise's shell.
The surface of the body and shell are embellished with engraved details enhancing the naturalistic components of the reptile.
The cover opens to reveal a sunken well and removable glass ink liner, above the contemporary engraved initials 'C.R' and coronet; the coronet indicates the importance of the piece.
The interior of the inkstand further incorporates an inset silver receptacle and a stamp box, each bearing secondary hinged covers.
These versatile compartments retain the original gilding to the interior.
Such large examples are rare to the market and this is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.
* Due to the nature of the reptiles features it has been determined this example replicates a tortoise; however, there are other reptile variants which may be applicable, including turtle and terrapin.
Condition
This antique ink stand is a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body, in addition to part hallmarks to the covers are all very clear.

A fine and impressive antique Edwardian English sterling silver sugar caster, an addition to our silver teaware collection.
This fine antique Edwardian sterling silver sugar caster has a baluster form onto a circular domed spreading foot.
The upper and lower portions of this piece are embellished with embossed and chased bead and scroll decoration accenting concave bordered, fluted decoration all in a spiral design.
The sugar caster retains the original hallmarked screw fit cover, embellished with pierced decoration incorporating chased and embossed bead and scroll decoration, the screw fit attachment indicates the fine quality of this piece.
The cover is further ornamented with a gadroon decorated border to the rim and is surmounted by a fine and impressive scroll decorated shaped baluster style finial.
The foot of this piece is embellished with embossed and chased stylized fluted decoration in a spiral design.

These exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian sterling silver peppers are stylistically modelled in the form of 12-gauge shells.
The upper portion of each pepper is embellished with pierced 'pepper' holes.
Each pepper pot retains the original fully hallmarked screw fit detachable base.
Each base retains the original gilding representing the brass of the shell and the body of each bears the original oxidised finish; examples with this combination is rare to the market.
Such examples in this exceptional and almost unused condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
These items have been crafted as a matching pair and will have been crafted in fewer years, however, due to the hallmarking system one pepper is struck with the date letter 'g' (1902) and the other bears the date letter 'i' (1906).
Condition
These antique Edwardian shell silver peppers are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
Full silver hallmarks to the surface of each body and base are very clear.
