Antique Veyrat French Parisian Silver Flatware Dinner Service for 12 with Boxes

About the Item

This set of antique French gold washed silverware were made by the well-known Veyrat company of Paris France, in circa 1890 in the period Art Nouveau style. There are a combined forty-eight pieces contained in these two leather fitted cases which compose a complete dinner service for twelve; twenty-four knives, twelve forks and twelve spoons. The forks and spoons are solid .950 silver with a gold wash and are very ornately decorated with a swirled filigree details and each is monogramed with period Art Nouveau script. The knives are divided into twelve that have sterling and gold washed blades and twelve with a silver handle and stainless blades. The knife handles have complimentary decorated handles to those of the forks and spoons. Each silver piece is signed with the 'Veyrat' diamond maker's mark and also with the Minerva 1 hallmark identifying the age and silver content as .950. The fitted boxes are also marked on the inside of the lid with the Veyrat of Paris France logo and there is a monogramed plate on the top of each leather bound box. As one can imagine, having a custom made dinner service for twelve made by such an exclusive maker during this period would have been a very costly endeavor and available to only the wealthiest echelon of the French nobility. Unfortunately, the provenance for this set has been lost over the years.

    Located in New Orleans, LA
Comprising an incredible 189 pieces, this impressive Meissen porcelain dinner service is an exceptional example of the firm's prized dinnerware. The bodies are crafted in the New Brandenstein relief pattern designed by Johann Friedrich Eberlein in 1744, which gives this service a distinct Rococo feel. The hand-painted enamel detailing is known as the Flowers and Insects motif and is executed with stunning vibrancy and intricacy. Since each piece is executed entirely by hand, no two pieces bear the exact same adornments.

Similar, single dining pieces are featured in Meissen Domestic Porcelain by Günther Sterba, 1991, figures 83 through 86.

The pieces bear the Meissen blue crossed swords that date this service between 1850/60-1924.

    By Tiffany & Co.
    Located in Big Bend, WI
The incredible multi-motif Olympian pattern, which was introduced by Tiffany & Co. in 1878, is the most elaborate and complex of all Tiffany flatware designs. Each piece of Olympian is designed to illustrate a well-known story of Classical mythology. The subjects vary on the different pieces. Edward Moore, designer of this pattern, dominated the first era of Tiffany made flatware and designed several full lines of sterling patterns. Moore's father manufactured for Tiffany and upon retirement left Edward Moore in charge at the young age of 24. In 1868 Tiffany incorporated and bought the Moore Company, making Moore a Tiffany director and chief designer and head of silverware operation. With his travels, he experienced many exotic cultures and art which significantly impacted his designs. After his death, his true genius was fully acknowledged and he as then called "A Prince of Silversmiths.... easily the foremost silversmith in the United States."
