About the Item

This remarkable Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Jerusalem by the Bezalel School around 1920, exemplifies the unique convergence of Zionist artistry, Jewish symbolism, and historic narrative that defined the early years of Israeli decorative arts. Fashioned entirely from silver, the lamp rests on four domed feet and features a beautifully chased and cast design that captures both ritual function and poetic expression. The front of the rectangular base is boldly adorned with the inscription "בצלאל ירושלים" (Bezalel Jerusalem), flanked by repoussé and chased emblems of Israel's seven species and regal iconography: a date palm, grape cluster, wheat stalk, pomegranate, seven-branched menorah, and a crown. These motifs, set within a linear decorative border, express the richness of the land and the spiritual heritage of the Jewish people. On each side of the base, domed rosettes embedded with delicate filigree details add further refinement. The eight candle holders are fashioned in beaker form and sit proudly atop the front ledge, each trimmed with a scrolling filigree pattern along their flared rims. Attached to the right side of the base, the shamash (servant light) is elaborately constructed with a saucer-like base and ornate filigree banding. It is removable and fitted into a curved bracket, allowing both stability and elegance in presentation. The most striking element is the raised backplate relief, an exquisite sculptural tableau depicting the rededication of the Temple. At the center, Mattathias the High Priest (כהן גדול) is shown kindling the grand seven-branched menorah, its stem knopped and branches splayed in faithful reference to the original Temple menorah. To the right stands Judah Maccabee, robed in period attire, surrounded by a celebratory procession. Figures flank the scene on both sides—some holding instruments such as cymbals, others with floral garlands draped over their shoulders—all evoking the joyous Hanukkah miracle and celebration. Behind them, other participants clap in reverence and jubilation. The scene is framed on either side by Jerusalem-style pillars—classical in form, rising from rugged, mountainous bases and crowned with torch-like finials, symbolizing eternal light. Across the upper register of the backplate runs the Hebrew verse: "הדליקו נרות בחצרות קדשך וקבעו שמונת ימי חנוכה" ("They lit lights in the courtyards of Your sanctuary and established the eight days of Hanukkah.") Above this inscription are three ruby-red cabochon glass stones set into ornamental bezels, echoing the priestly breastplate. A triangular extension at the top, pierced with a hole, allows for wall suspension—a common method of displaying Hanukkah lamps in Jerusalem homes. Embossed Bezalel Jerusalem at front of base and marked 925 on reverse. 11.97ozt
