Britannia Standard Silver Dog Nose Rat Tail Pattern Spoon

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique William III Britannia standard silver Dog Nose Rat Tail pattern spoon; an addition to our silver cutlery collection. This exceptional antique William III Britannia standard* silver spoon has been crafted in the Dog Nose Rat Tail pattern. The reverse surface of this antique silver spoon handle terminal is ornamented with the contemporary engraved coat of arms of a lion rampant below a crescent, an inescutcheon dexter chief of an arrow point downward with two long barbs engrailed on the inner edge (pheon); the anterior surface is plain and unembellished. The reverse of this impressive example of antique silverware features a rat tail to the rounded bowl. * Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). Condition This antique 17th century silver spoon is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The British hallmarks struck to the reverse of the handle are very clear in keeping with age and location.
