A Long Silver Turkish Torah Pointer, 1905. Judaica yad

About the Item

A long silver Turkish Torah pointer, or "yad," from 1905 is an exquisite piece of Judaica, reflecting the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the Ottoman Empire's Jewish community. The use of a Torah pointer is a longstanding tradition in Jewish practice, emphasizing the reverence for the Torah scrolls preserving their sanctity and preventing wear. This Torah pointer reflects the Ottoman Empire's influence on Jewish religious artifacts. Longer pointers were often preferred for ease of use, allowing the reader to comfortably reach the text. The pointer is made of silver and handcrafted by skilled artisans, it features a spherelike finial characteristic of Ottoman artistry and an applied suspension ring on its end. The handle has a twisting pillar design that tapers into a long bar adorned with an engraved dedication. making it both a functional and decorative object. The tip is shaped like a hand with two outstretched fingers, with the Hebrew letter 'Hey' engraved on the forehand. The name of the donor is engraved on the top of the bar handle with the date; 8, Adar the 1st, 1905, which adds to its personal and religious significance. This Torah pointer is highly valued both for its religious function and as a piece of art. Collectors of Judaica, historians, and museums would find it a significant artifact, representing the Jewish community's religious practices and artistic achievements in the early 20th century Ottoman Empire.
