Magnificent Lot of Two Sprinkling Spoons, 19th Century, Sterling Silver

About the Item

It was in 1735-1740 that the sprinkling spoon appeared for the first time in France. Magnificent set of spoons to sprinkle in solid silver. The first is in the shape of a finely chiseled scallop shell and has 3 hallmarks including the large Province guarantee hallmark: horizontal oval, with a head of Hercules framed by the numbers of the department. Period: 19th century circa: 1819 - 1838 Weight: 58.9grs 3 Hallmarks: Goldsmiths and "The old man" also called "Michelangelo" The second just as magnificent, more sober in shape, "uniplat" model, also in solid silver. Period: 19th century circa: 1853 - 1906 Weight: 86.5grs 4 Hallmarks: Goldsmiths and “oak leaf” hallmark Also called sugar spoon, it is intended to serve cane sugar newly imported from American plantations. Used to sweeten seasonal fruits and exotic drinks such as chocolate and coffee, it was initially reserved for an elite. Made of silver or vermeil, it is made to order by a specialized master silversmith. An object filled with charm and femininity, the sprinkling spoon is a rare example in the history of the decorative arts: it is in fact in the provinces and not in Paris that the most original models will be created. The main production cities are: Lille, Besançon, Rennes, Nantes, Angers, Toulouse, Aix, Nantes, Metz and Perpignan.
